How Our Brains Turn Women Into Objects
There is, it turns out, more than one kind of “objectification”

Recent reports of a mountain lion or cougar stalking the campus of the University of Iowa prompted campus jokesters to tweet their surprise that Michelle Bachman was in town. A cougar, colloquially, is an attractive older woman who seeks out trysts with younger men, and to some, it seems that Bachmann fits the bill. This emphasis on appearance is nothing new for high-profile women who are anything but homely, and feminist scholars are quick to point out its potential detrimental effects on perceptions of female competence.
Of course, we don’t need to consider reactions to political candidates to understand this idea. There is a well-known tension between seeing someone as, and appreciating them for, a body as opposed to a mind. At least, that’s what parents tell their daughters when their school clothes veer too far towards the revealing.
Science has backed parents up on this. A recent study found that showing men pictures of sexualized women evokes less activity in areas of the brain responsible for mental state attribution—that is, the area of the brain that becomes active when we think we are looking at an entity capable of thought and planned action. Other studies have found similar results. When men see body shots of women as compared with face shots, they judge women to be less intelligent, likeable, ambitious and competent.
A new study by Kurt Gray and colleagues in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, however, suggests that this kind of objectification might not cause perceivers to see women as mindless bodies but instead cause a transformation in the kind of minds that they perceive.
Research into mind perception has found two dimensions along which we tend to categorize others: agency (the capacity to act, plan) and experience (the capacity to feel emotions). A robot, for example, is high on the dimension of agency but low in experience. It can think, but it can’t feel. When we see flesh, on the other hand, we tend to see experience but not agency—an entity capable of pleasure and pain but not necessarily the sharpest or most useful tool in the shed.
So, objectification might not lead to perceptions of women as inanimate objects but as different kinds of humans—ones that are capable of feeling but not thinking. To test this hypothesis Gray et al. presented participants with images of individuals and varied the amount of flesh shown in the pictures (the amount of “body focus”). In line with their hypothesis, seeing full bodies, as compared to just faces, caused ratings of agency to diminish but ratings of experience to increase. The same was true when naked bodies were compared with clothed bodies. Indeed, as the sexual suggestiveness of the images increased, perceptions of agency decreased and perceptions of experience increased accordingly.
While this might initially seem modestly encouraging in that the objectified are perceived as humans and not objects, there is a disconcerting side effect of perceiving entities as high on experience—we see them as more capable of being harmed and, therefore, as more in need of protection. The researchers demonstrated this in a final study that showed participants are less willing to inflict painful shocks on half-naked individuals as compared to clothed individuals. It seems that when we see bodies we tend to also see potential victims. And though victimhood might be endearing to some, it certainly won’t help win elections.

Update: My first term of classes is ending in 3 weeks, I have successfully been able to maintain an A average while attending school and working at 2 jobs! WOO HOO! Although, I recently switched one of my jobs. Still working in the food industry and still working with pizza, just a new location and a new name. Along with a higher salary, better hours, and a new title. :] I’m extremely excited and looking forward to watching this restaurant take off. I have successfully completed my med training and can now be left alone at my other place of employment. And my vacations and Brent’s photography tour are kicking off on Saturday with a trip to Hershey Park. That’s all the updates so far :]
Thoughts: I think men are pretentious sexist pigs. Seriously, I was looking at SOMEONE’S blog today and it was full of naked bitches, so much for not needing porn. As a female things like that come off as well disgusting, and degrading toward women. It’s okay if we put things like that out there, but for a man to blog it and be like epic, or what a win.. seriously is degrading to woman kind. UGH. And makes me feel self-concise about my body because you blog about unrealistic looking women, have you seen what most of America looks like today? Learn to be a little more respectful and stop walking all over bitches.
Randomness: Sometimes when I’m home alone I freak myself out and have to lock myself in my bedroom with lights on and the TV to calm myself down.

It’s been a few days, and I wasn’t able to finish my epic MIAMI blogging. Here’s how the rest of my time in Miami went, played in the ocean, sunbathed, listened to a 1.5 hour presentation on time shares, ate a bunch, drank a ton, and started for home. In short. Highlights: got a $100 gift card to Kitchen 305 ate there on Ladies Night, got 4 drinks for $10 :] had an epic dinner and desserts! Went to a State Park in Ft. Lauderdale, saw some “dangerous marine life” and a sand crab that tried to kill me with his razor claws and evilness! Slept at a rest area in North Carolina from 1am-5am, phone died in South Carolina so no one knew where we were for hours. Returned to 15 degrees in PA from 86 degrees in Miami. Did next to nothing on Saturday, pumped out school work like woah Sunday and went to Rey Azteca for dinner followed by seeing The Social Network at the local dollar theatre. Woke up early, and was on time for work this morning, went in refreshed and relaxed! Had a busy day, now time to relax and wait for my lameface! More blogging to come peeps, keep reading!

Today was a dynamic day. We woke and watched the sunrise on the beach this morning, it was gorgeous! We did a bit of exploring went to the southern most tip of Miami and walked through a park. This whole town is amazing it was 70 by 8 in the morning. We had breakfast (I was mostly excited because McDonald’s here has the only breakfast food that I eat.) We went to get more of our souvenirs. Changed into our swim suits and swam in the ocean getting a nice sunburn to bring home to PA! Afterward we had some drinks and ate a snack, then quickly decided to go back to the ocean. I lay on the beach because I’m tired of climbing in and out of my wet swimsuit. Go back to our room have dinner, and lay in bed listening to my book. To sum it all up I’m sitting on a lounge chair poolside under the moonlight, and epic lights of the welcoming hotel! Today has been long, epic and eventful, tomorrow I’m sure is the same!

Well lets see… From last night where I left off. We went for a walk last night down the “strip”, and then back to the hotel via the beach. I absolutely love walking the beach at night, especially when the water is warm. We returned to our room, wrote out our postcards and fell asleep. Woke up by 9 something this morning. And immediately went on a 2.6 mile walk. Got some groceries, to save some money. Came back to our room, had some lunch and went to the lobby to get a drink. Returned to our room, decided to walk to the liquor store bought some alcohol, went to CVS bought some juice then returned and drank. It rained all day, (the second journey out on foot was terrible) after a few drinks we went to the heated outdoor pool and to the beach. It stopped raining for long enough to spend some time outside! The ocean tried to kill me with the same piece of driftwood over and over again until I removed it from the water. Also, a coconut (maybe) washed into my feet until I kicked it, paining my foot and we removed it from the water (it now resides in the bathroom sink – we’re going to open it eventually) We returned Brent blogged, I watched tv. We Drank watched American Chopper having a final drink. Now the night is closing, I’m not sure what else is in store. We’re getting up at 6:45 to watch the sunrise on Miami, but shit happens ;]

I\’m In Miami Bitch!
Okay so I’ve had a crazy couple of days. On 1/14/2011 myself and Brent packed up our car and began an epic journey to Florida! It was smooth sailing until Virginia (where we hit about 40ish minutes of road construction at 1 AM) – Brent took this much worse than I did. I put on my iPod and listened to “Eat Pray Love – by Elizabeth Gilbert” Somehow I fell asleep. (Mostly because I worked 10:45-6:15 – not leaving work until 7:30ish? And because I barely slept Thursday night in anticipation of this epic journey.) I woke up periodically to find out what state we were in, and Virginia you definitely took the longest! I slept through North and South Carolina too. Deciding its best to stay awake through Georgia and Florida. We Got lost going to our hotel in Clermont, FL (pissing an already miserable Brent off more! He drove from PA straight through FL with only bathroom breaks in between. — I offered to drive he wanted to “experience” it! whatever that means!) When we finally arrived we put all our bags in our room, and headed straight to the bar! For 28 dollars we were able to get 2 cheese-steaks and fry combo’s 4 mixed drinks (a bikini martini, 2 patron margaritas, and an epically delicious hypnotic/Malibu rum drink) and a pitcher of beer. I think something was forgotten from our bill, but I wasn’t going to bring it up. We tipped generously! After our bar experience we walked to the gas station right next door where they sell wine, beer, and malt beverages. Brent couldn’t figure out what state we were in — kept telling me we were in Virginia. The lady behind the counter should not have served us, but we walked away with a 4 loko and a mikes hard black cherry lemonade, 2 bags of tgi friday’s potato skin chips and 2 $1 lottory tickets. We didn’t really drink our drinks, Ate all our chips, and didn’t win the lottory (not even a free ticket). I passed out somewhere before 9 PM, and Brent followed soon after. We woke early, 6 AMish fully refreshed and ready to take on the day! We went to a Renninger’s Antique Flea Market Thing (got lost on the way, Brent stopped at a gas station to adjust the GPS I went in for directions. Thank you Lady at whatever gas station we went to in MT. Dora FL! ) At the flea market (can anyone tell me why they are called flea markets?) we walked in circles looked at a bunch of crap and only walked away with 6 oz of Tea (carrot cake tea and calming mind tea — by Terry’s TeaZ * http://www.TerrysTeaZ.com OR (863) 606 – TEAZ * They’re amazing ORDER TEA! a Pepsi Sign and a sign about pears? I also got the best Greek pita I’ve ever had in my LIFE! It was delicious! And Brent got in an argument with a little Italian man who wanted him to buy me a Cast Iron (10) Frying Pan. The man got enraged when Brent wouldn’t buy it called the thing Brent had purchased crap, and said he was busy he didn’t have time for him and his junk! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH Best moment of the vacation so far. Then we pack up our crap and drive 4 hours south to MIAMI! arrive at our hotel with valet parking and bell hop service and settle in — only to find out our toilet is broken! We go to the beach, put our toes in the ocean (which is surprisingly warm for January in the Atlantic!) find a message in a bottle, (no idea what it meant — threw it back) and take some pictures. We explore the estate a bit grab things from our room and complain about the broken toilet. It was fixed while we ate an 80 dollar dinner at Kitchen 305! It was amazing, I have hated every kind of fish I’ve tried until tonight! Mahi Mahi is the best tasting fish ever (Brent got it because I wanted to try fish — but was afraid I wouldn’t like it) I got Absolute Penne (Penne with Vodka Sauce and Chicken) It came with a mini bottle of absolute, incase it wasn’t vodka enough for me! EPIC 
we also got 2 cocktails for before/with our meal. A wonderful experience to treat ourselves in a beautiful city! Then we retired to our rooms, I worked on the final bits of school work and he watched tv then took a nap. Now its time to see what Miami night life is like! Good-bye WordPress/Internet, Miami HERE I COME!

So today, I wake up with like 5 minutes to spare as always and discover that I am sick, so I go to work and end up feeling worse and worse on the drive over, to the point that I’m like 5 minutes late to work. Walk in and they tell me how “ill” I look and tell me they’ll find someone to work my shift because they don’t want to get sick, finally at 12 someone comes in so I can go, I get home lay on the couch and feel worse and worse, I end up getting sick again then my cat starts to lick his fur off his behind again, so I try calling the vet, no answer of course. So I pack him in the car and make the journey up the mountain turns out he’s allergic to something so they gave him an allergy pill and told me to give him a flea treatment, just in case. Now I have to wash Baby, brush him and shave off the fur clumps in case he has fleas that might be biting Hatteras, Baby is long haired.. and very difficult to wash/groom. After all of that I come home and I’m feeling fineish. Plans with Katie for her final days in State College, as she begins her live on the grind in the great NEPA.

Upon waking this morning to the brutal shaking by my Lameface, it has come to my attention that I either do not get enough sleep (most likely the case) or I need to not work early shifts (would be great!) However, to pay for all my luxuries, I need both of my jobs as of currently, eventually I will be able to shorten back down to 1 40 hour work week, much less stressful and tiring than the two I have now. So anyway, I get to work punch in and realize my phone is home. Work until break (doing mostly returns and straightening) then on break look at next week’s schedule, I’m not on it! Get very excited push through my final hour and half and return home to change, check facebook and leave again.. when I hear a truck roll up, door slam and my doorbell ring (I’m not fully dressed so I peek out my bedroom window, its Rent a Center. Like really, I wait until they leave, not in the mood to deal with that nonsense, and head into my second job. Get there get counseled about being 45 minutes late Monday, and leave for my “run” (which is a nice way of picking all my clients up), Run to walmart get some items and see momma, return to the “site”, prep dinner, deal with poop (literally), go to art class, return cook dinner, deal with more poop (literally), feed the clients, give meds, put them in bed, and write in logs/do paperwork. Returned home to spark conversation with my lameface, and he was to engrossed in his computer to even respond to me. UGH! doing a bit of reading, or listening to my audio book i purchased from itunes then passing out. Thought you’d all like to hear about the longest day of my week lol!
